I was a 16E20 Hawk Missile Fire Control Crewman. In B Btry. 6th Btn. 562nd Arty.
32AADCOM.
I served my tour in Germany as Permanant Party (Hawk Missiles) in Wildflecken, Germany. What a very Historic place that was.
I love to look back at those days, but I hated being there. One week of summer, long cold deep snow winters. It was never safe on Post at night. Man, what was it with that place? All the roving gangs at night, that would pumel anyone in site.
My first day there almost one in 5 guys had a black eye or worse, I did not meet my new roommate for over a week, cause he was in the hospital after getting kicked in the face by a gang one night.
I guess it was because Wildflecken was a Transient Post, most of the troops there were only there training in the field at Wildflecken for a week or so. So all they had to do was to get drunk and cause trouble at night. That along with the fact most guys were drafted and left there wifes or girlfriends back in the States for "Jody" to Paw at, at the least.
I was warned about Wildflecken in my training at Ft.Bliss, ElPaso. They said it was the worst place you could get stationed, for Hawk Missile Duty. So when my buddie Bernie and I first got to our duty station, pulling up to the hill along that long snowy cold road bouncing around in the back of a deuce and a half truck, we were shocked to find out that the B Battery we were going to was Wildflecken. Up to that time they were just saying we were going to B Battery.
On the up side it was a beautiful place.
I would like to go back some day maybe and visit. They now have what is called "Border Tours" where you can tour the Cold War border areas, and actually go onto Post Wildflecken.
So here is to the memories of the Cold War,
and Germany.

We found witnesses who know about an emergency landing of an US-Army helicopter in eastern germany near Zwickau, which lost its way on the flight from Frankfurt to Grafenwöhr. Helicopter, crew and passangers (including one general) were hold for approx. 6 weeks in east germany by the german communist authority.

This is a great website. I served in the 3/80th at Ernst Ludwig Kaserne from 1964 - 1966. Married a German (Gerda) there when I was a PFC - in the Cambri Kaserne Chapel. I was so impressed by the unit & people I served with (especially the non-coms) after an honorable discharge (1967, plus 3 yrs USAR), and back to school on the GI Bill, I became a direct commission in 1974 (Medical Service Corps), enlisted for Germany & went to the 8th ID & 8th MED BN (Mannheim/Bad Kreuznach); served 30 yrs on Active Duty (multiple times to Germany). I retired a Colonel August 1998, have been a political appointee, and now working back in Defense here in San Diego, CA. My wife Gerda & I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary this past June. We are back in Germany often & always go by E. Ludwig Kaserne (now a housing development). 1 of our daughters was married in the same military chapel as Gerda & I. Much of Darmstadt looks the same (they do a great job preservation). I loved my military service & the people I served with, but it all began at at Ernst Ludwig Kaserne. By the way, my wife Gerda is the first female pilot (hobby)from Griesheim/Darmstadt where German aviation was born & she was in the newspaper there a few years ago. 1 year ago she flew a WWII US Fighter here in S. California which was in the Darmstadt & Griesheim papers as well. Great website you have & would love to hear from people. ....dr dan

I was stationed in Illesheim, Germany Stork Barracks. We had a small Parachute Rigger packing, Maint & Aeria Delivery Detachment Co B
15th Quartermaster. I found my wife to be in a little town called Bad Windsheim, we are now 42 years plus, together. I liked Germany so much I went back over and lived there for a total of 23 years, working in my trade in the printing industrie. Naturally I speak, read and write German fluently and Germany became my 2nd Home. The only reason I returned to the USA is because I couldn't keep up with the Germans and became an alcholic,Ha, Ha. Oh, I forgot to mention that we went to South Africa 2 1/2 years, 6months Rhodesia (is now Zimbabwe) and 3 years in Zambia. I am still looking for my fellow Parachute Riggers, especially Tracy Williams whom left our Rigger Outfit and joined the Special Forces, If anyone knows where he is e-mail his address to me please. The same goes for the rest of you guys. Thanks Walter for creating this Website

I was assigned to the 536th Military Police Company in Munich Germany. I arrived in Munich in September 1966. The military police station and barracks were located in Von Steuben Hall, which was outside of McGraw Kaserne. Detachments from the 536th were located in Bad Tolz, Garmisch, Landshut, and Berchtesgaden. In 1968 headquarters was moved to Augsburg and a detachment remained in Munich.
