The 112th Labor Supervision Center recently moved from the two school buildings in Frankfurt where it had previsouly been located to a renovated section of Gutleut Kaserne (near the Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof).

The two schools in question, the Hallgarten and Staatsbau Schools, are being derequisitioned by the Frankfurt Military Post and will be returned to Frankfurt city authotities. Before the war, the Staatsbau school served as a German engineer educational center and the Hallgarten was a city elementary school.

Current CO of the 112th, Maj E. D. Fitzgerald, was present at the ceremony held at FMP headquarters.

Webmaster Note:
If anyone can provide details on the move to Gutleut or the subsequent move to Camp Eschborn, I would be very interested in hearing from you.

(Source: Email from LTC (ret) Thomas R. Rozman, son of LTC Robert W. Rozman)
My father, LTC (Ret) Robert W. Rozman, was the commander of the 112th Service Center Headquarters and Pulaski Barracks in Vogelweh from 1962-1965. He had previously been assigned to 1st Battle Group, 30th Infantry at Ledward Barracks, Schweinfurt, then recently reorganized into 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry.

I have a large number of photos of the Pulaski Barracks area and some of the Labor Service units. I also have some remembrances of the organization, particularly my father's work involving integration of labor service men into the local economy when USAREUR made a policy decision for cost saving reasons to inactivate the units. Then, on reversal of that decision, my father's work to recruit and rebuild the units when the expected cost savings did not materialize and a negative effect occurred to mission as the labor service support was degraded.

My father passed away on 5 April 2008 and is interred at Arlington. He served for 26 years from 1939 - December 1965. He enlisted as a private in the Infantry and rose to 1st Sergeant in an Infantry company before receiving a direct commission in May 1945 to Infantry 2nd lieutenant in combat on Luzon, PI.

As an officer he had served as follows prior to assignment to the 112th:

  2LT 1st, PLT, CO F, 2nd BN, 169th INF, 43rd ID — May-July 1945 in combat on Luzon (Ipo Dam Sector)
Company and Battery Commander — CO F, 2nd BN, 169th INF, 43rd ID (twice, Guard and active in Germany); HHC, 2nd BN, 16th INF (twice, Guard and active in Germany); SVC Battery, 67th ARMD ARTY BN, DIVARTY, 3rd AD (Ft Knox)
  BN S-1 and S-2 (Guard) 2nd BN, 169th INF
BN S-2 and S-4 (Active, Camp Pickett and Germany) 2nd BN, 169th INF
Asst Regimental S-2 39th INF, 9th ID (Germany)
S-4 5th TNG REGT (Ft. Knox)
Asst S-2 The Armor Center (Ft. Knox)
Supply/Logistics Advisor to the South Vietnamese Army Infantry School
1st Army, Boston—Advisor to the 1st and 2nd BNs 101st INF, 26th ID and later 126th SIG BN after forming as a battalion
  1st BG, 30th INF, 3rd ID

bold = units that were serving in Germany at time of assignment

Over his service among his many assignments, he was assigned to duty with the 30th, 39th, and 169th Infantry Regiments and the 67th Armored Artillery Battalion. These units were elements of the 3rd, 9th and 43rd Infantry Divisions and the 3rd Armored Division.

He served two tours in Germany (1951-54 and 1961-65) as well as an extended service in the South Pacific (1942-1945) and Vietnam (1956-57).

To give some sense of the experience factor for this particular service center headquarters commander and likely others, Major Rozman was a very experienced soldier and officer. In addition to peace time and mobilization service from 1939 to 1942 as a private to sergeant, he had served in combat as a staff sergeant squad leader, rifle platoon sergeant (Tech Sergeant in WW II) and acting platoon leader, and rifle company first sergeant from 1942-1945. He served 26 years, 20 of those years in the active Army of the United States. His combat experience was recognized by the award of the CIB, Bronze Star and four Purple Hearts.

LTC Rozman, in addition to various troop schools, was a graduate of the Tactical Intelligence Officer’s Course at the Army Ground School at Ft. Riley, Kansas and the Infantry Officer Advanced Course at Ft. Benning. He several times while with the 112th was on TDY assignments to make presentations at a school that operated near Garmisch as I recall — I used to know the name of the school but cannot recall it at this time (it was intelligence related I believe).

There are many stories that I need to recall like the ex-French Foreign Legionnaires and the way my father said they kept their barrack areas as well as my trumpet instructor, an ex-Polish Navy man who could not return to Poland. The Labor Service was a very interesting community as one of the officers of the 112th, then 2LT John Doble observed, a Niagara University graduate and starting basketball player who I served with later in the 197th Separate Infantry Brigade at Ft. Benning in 1974 when he was a captain and again in the Collective training Directorate, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Training, U. S. Army Training and Doctrine Command at Ft. Monroe when he was an LTC in 1989.

You are right, the 112th was a small headquarters — at this early stage of trying to recapture memory and facts I recall a field grade, a captain, a lieutenant, a sergeant major several other NCOs and enlisted, I believe several civilian admin people and their may have been some labor service men in support. There may have been other staff but that’s what I recall at this time. I believe in the collection I have photos of the headquarters building and its interior.

Re: your question — when then Major Buz Sawyer contacted my Dad from USAREUR Hqs shortly after leaving 1st Bn, 30th Infantry about a possible opportunity my Dad might be interested in, it was about the time you refer to. I believe the reorganization was part of the situation.

Reorganization was the theme in USAREUR at the time as the Army moved to the ROAD organization. Then Colonel DuPuy had left the battle group in Schweinfurt and the battle group was reorganized into a battalion. Apparently there was some tension with the new commander and many of the field grades decided to go elsewhere in USAREUR. The 112th opportunity was a perfect fit for my Dad at that point in his service career. It was a place where, based on his background, he could make a significant contribution. Not only had he enlisted in the Guard in late 1939 as the nation started taking measures in the event of war, but he had already had a stint in the Civilian Conservation Corps enrolling as soon as he had graduated from high school in the summer of 1939. As well, he had worked as a tradesman in residential construction while in guard service from 1946-1950. He was uniquely qualified for the role with his Eastern European heritage, his extensive command experience and experience in construction and the trades--he was a skilled cabinet maker and carpenter from my own personal experience.
