Baumholder Army Airfield, 1958

A view of the parking ramp at Baumholder Airfield. The young L-19 pilots assigned to Baumholder AAF were, shall we say, very spirited pilots. They would sometimes show off their short-field takeoff and landing skills, even using parts of the field not intended for such things. They would also buzz the NIKE-AJAX anti-aircraft missile site (a battery of 5th MSL Bn, 6th Arty) not far from the field, which would usually cause the site to go on alert.
