In 1958, the Sixth Infantry Regiment was deactivated as a regiment and the Berlin units were reformed as 2nd and 3rd Battle Group, 6th Infantry.

During last September's reorganisation of Berlin Brigade in accordance with current Army-wide reorganization plans, the two battle groups in Berlin were reorganized and redesignated the 2nd and 3rd Battalions.

Along with the redesignation went the continued vigilance and preparedness which have characterized all units of the Sixth Infantry throughout its long history.
