The buildings which at present house the US Army Hospital in Wiesbaden were originally built in 1938. The German military hospital was planned for 350 beds with an additional 50 bed psychiatric section.

On January 26, 1939, a ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of the hospital plant. The hospital was designated as Reservelazarett IV, Standortlazarett Wiesbaden (Wiesbaden garrison hospital).

However, work was still being done on the interiors of all the buildings - work that was considerably slowed down with the beginning of World War II. It was only in 1942 that work on the complex was finally completed and the hospital could be put in operation.

On June 7 1945, the 4146th Hospital Plant arrived in Wiesbaden to take over the hospital plant and begin operations for the US military.

Between the time that the hospital began operations (June 1945) and early 1949, hospital bed capacity has been gradually reduced. The greatest number of patients in the hospital was 663 in August 1945. At present, the assigned capacity is 150 beds.

On June 6, 1947 the Wiesbaden hospital was designated as the Neuropsychiatric Center for the European Command which function it continues to serve until the present time. In addition to about six officers who staff the Medical and Surgical Services, there are also five on the Neuropsychiatric Service.

With the organization of military posts (early 1947) in the American Zone of Occupation, the 317th Station Hospital was assigned to the Wiesbaden Military Post.

As time went on the Wiesbaden Military Post became exclusively an Air Force post and, in keeping with this, in January 1949 the 317th was relieved of its assignment to EUCOM and became an Air Force unit.

Known for a short time as the 7140th Station Medical Group, the hospital was later designated as the 495th Medical Group, Wiesbaden Military Post.
