Brocken,
probably early 1940s

Post card with aerial view of the German radio site in the Harz
mountains.
This hill was in the Soviet
Zone of Occupation and was used for a short period following VE-Day
by the US Army to establish radio communications to Berlin. It looks
like the Americans remained until early 1947. Can
anybody provide details?
The Russians occupied the hill in April 1947 and established a major
radio intercept station on Brocken. The station was operated by
Soviet and East German signal units until the fall of the Berlin
Wall.
