You have done a really great job on your site. I am looking for information. Anything anyone could tell me would help. If you remember Cyrus Elswick, please send me an email. He is my uncle and he passed away last week. All I can find military wise is a picture of Company A graduating class C.R.T.C. taken July 30, 1951. It has the following names on it: (if any sound familiar please let me know) E. R. Reidelbach 1st Sgt. , Capt W F Eggerman Comdg, and Martin (I think it is old and can't see for sure) Kennelly. If anyone knows anything about this unit or these people, please let me know. I am interested in the fact that my Uncle stated that he got a lady pregnant that was in Germany. She was in a camp and he kidnapped her over the fence and took her. But he got caught and they took her back. His son should be about 50ish now. He never had any children other than this. He adopted a little boy that was mentally and physically deformed. They raised him and he passed away about 1998. I would love to make contact with his son and let him know about his father. One of his officers sent him a picture of his son and a letter with his name in it. So, I know he is looking too. I have been unable to locate this, but hopefully I will. Genealogy is something from my heart and I hope to be able to add his son to my family and my family tree. I have 2 small kids and he loved them so much. I could not have even imaged if he knew he had grandchildren or possibly great grandchildren by now. Thanks so much and I hope someone will see this and respond.
Thanks so much
Paula

I served with the 5/83 Arty in Baumholder from 1961 to 1963. Got extended twice - Berlin and Cuban missle crisis. Played baseball & basketball for the 8th Divarty. Got to travel a lot and see many things. Wouldn't take a million for those days, but wouldn't do it again for a million either! Does anyone know what happened to the 83rd after 1963?

On August, 10, 1951 we arrived in Bremerhaven. After a few days there we went to Sontohofen where I was assigned to an engineer co. in Kaiserslautern. After a few weeks there I was assigned to the 504th Eng. Svc. Co. attached to the 7812th S.C.U. at Pirmasens. That area had been the French Occupation Zone. When the Americans moved in it was called The Rhine Military Post with headquarters in Kaiserslautern. The post had 5 sub-posts, Pirmasens, Baumholder, Bad Krueznac, Worms and Mainz. When we got to Pirmasens only 2 buildings were occupied, the rest were being built. The mess hall wasn't finished so we were eating in a garage which was also the beer hall. The chow was good and we had no K.P. no guard duty, no reville and no M.Ps. We never had it better. Like all good things that came to pass. Once they got organized things really changed and they made us feel we were back in the army. My job was in engineer supplies, I visited all the sub-posts getting equipment. I went to bull-dozer school in Murnau in The Bavarian Alps. It was real nice there. Any town in the area that wanted a soccer field could have the army build it. They had the cranes, graders and dozers to level the land. That's all for now. Jack

Hello,

My name is Florian Giro, I am from Massweiler, Germany. I am still working on a project to research the history of US Army in Massweiler which is in danger of slipping into oblivion. During the Years from the 50th`s until the early 90th`s the following units were stationed at the old base in Massweiler:
12th Ordnance Bataillon
529th Ordnance Company
564th MP Company
207th Signal Company
63rd Signal Bataillon
To realize the project I need Your help in the form of stories, pictures or information about the history of these units. Meanwhile I´m in contact with many veterans who was stationed in Massweiler during different time periods.
I´ve also collected many pictures from the old base, from nowadays and even from the past. So if You can support my project please contact me.

I´m sure that I can bring back some nice memories to you!

Looking forward to hearing from!

Thank You in advance!!!
Florian

I like your homepage. It’s great ,many informations.
The Nashville Line Dancers Aalen (NLDA) have been performing this dance style with great enthusiasm already for several years. The group performs more than 150 dances of the category Country Line Dance and is regarded as one of Germany’s top Show Line Dancers. Elvis songs are presented in the best Line Dance fashion.
‘’Tribute To The King Of Music & Viva Las Vegas Dance Show’’ – their dance show is viewed as unique in Germany. They also act as background dancers in the show of the great, internationally well known Elvis double Jack Favor, who is also known as ‘’Eifel-Elvis’’,
‘’ the best Elvis since Elvis ’’.
Their many performances speak for themselves: NLDA is Line Dance Show at it’s best.
NLDA targets at having Line Dance (which originally supported only Country and Western Music) mingled with other music styles such as Elvis music, pop music etc.
Thus Line Dance shall be opened to a broader audience and it shall be shown to the puplic, how divers this dance style with nowadays more than 4000 different dances can be.
If you like, you can sign our guestbook.

More Information about and contact to NLDA you get at: http:// www.nlda.de or
E-Mail: linedancersnlda@aol.com

times. Was there from 1983 to 84. It was something coming from Ft.Bliss out at Mcgregor
Range living in a open bay to having my own room
when i got to Germany. and it was not HOT. It was a great tour. I will never forget.

Get site! I served two tours in Germany. Both at the Babenhausen Kaserne. First tour was 1961-1964 with the Ration Breakdown Platoon from Co. A, 14th QM Bn. Second tour was 1971-1975. First I was Supply Sgt for Service Battery and then the Asst. PSNCO for the 2nd Bn, 83d FA. I then went to the 41st FA Group as the PSNCO. Before I left in 1975, I took over as the PSNCO for 2nd Bn, 5th FA. I was on orders in 1982 for another tour in Germany, but when DA could not tell me where I would be stationed, I decided to retire. I just had this feeling that I was Babenhausen bound, again. I have a great ghost story about the kaserne if anyone would like to hear it. Just contact me at weav5207@alltel.net. Take care

Serving in a forwardly deployed infantry battalion with an active general defense position (GDP) in the Federal Republic Of Germany in the early to mid 1980s was a wonderful experience. I served with the 2/28 "Black Lions" Infantry Battalion, 8th Infantry Division (Mechanized) and the 3/8 "War Eagles" Infantry Battalion, 8th Infantry Division (Mechanized) at Lee Barracks in Mainz-Gonsenheim. I would enjoy corresponding with soldiers (Officer and Enlisted) from those units and from that era. "BLACK LIONS, SIR!"

Jack

Great web site, bring's back a million memeries, was stationed at Merrell Bk's in Nurnberg in 58-60, Those were the day's my friend, can't get them out of my mind if I tried, along with a couple of artical 15's, (bed check really was unecessary enyway), remember a three day pass given to my one time, had to take on thur, fri, sat or loose it, hit the strass wed evening but no one around, all my favorite places were dead so decided to cut it short, catch the strassabahn back, then I saw this beautiful young lady crossing the street, decided to cross in the same place, met her half way, spoke to her, expecting a snub, she stopped and asked me if I would like to give her a baby, she spoke great english and dressed to the hilt, she even paid for the taxi to pastorious str american housing area where she said she worked as a maid, I tried my best for 4 days to make her wish come true, 6 months later while at a static display at soldiers field I was talking to a 1st lt from HQ Btry and this young lady walks up and the Lt introduces her to me as his wife, she looked about 6 months PG, said she was from Tulsa, OK. Did not stick around to find answers. Just a little thing that happoned amoung a lot of good times.

Hello,

Discovered your web site today. Interested in the history of the organizations that occupied Berlin post WWII.

I understand the 82nd Airborne, 78th Infantry Division, and 2nd AD were the first to do so. According to several books, and reports that describe incidences involving a substantial number of American military personnel, especially 1946 to 1948.

For instance there were two Americans GI's of the 78th ID killed near Tempelhof Airport. Assailants are not identified or apprehended.

Lt. James Wilson, an ordnance office was shot, and killed by a Soviet sentry in Berlin, Germany.

Attempted to gain more information about Wilson through NARA, but required more personal information.

Purpose: To determine the recognition issued to such veterans that gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. i.e. Purple Heart.

I would appreciate any assistance.

Regards,
Robert E. Johnson

I was stationed in the 97th General Hospital as a medic and as a laboratory technician in 1953 and 1954. I saw the Atomic Cannon in streets of Frankfurt during Alerts, ministered to Billy Graham when he came in on emergency visit in 1954,went on train/and air evacuation's, was there when Adenauer was running for president of West Germany, attended many American Generals, and saw Russian Military Offericers and their family in the Hospital, also saw the troops of NATO when the had their military exercises and took over our movie theater as their HQ.Because of this service I was able to attend Pharmacy school at Columbia University under the G.I. Bill, and became a Registered Pharmacist in NY and a Dir.of Pharmacy in a large NY Hospital. If there are any 97th people out there, give me an e-mail back.

I am trying to locate a Army veteran named Robert "Poncho" Garcia. He was in the 321st signal battalion and maybe the 34th signal in Germany in 1954. He hung out at the "Green Shack" with guys from the 34th signal such as Norman Kummer from New York. Robert might have been from Puerto Rico and was of Latin descent. He also looked like he knew where to find the mess hall. He might have been a E-7. ANY SHRED of information would be helpfull no matter how small. Thank you for your time and God bless.

Initially assigned to Mannheim Germany, Sullivan Barracks in June 1955, one month after the occupation ended. Was assigned to the 62nd AAA Battalion. We had M-15 half tracks and M-16 Half tracks. One had quad fifties on it with a manned turret, the other had a 37mm gun, sided with a fifty callaber on each side. We later gave the French the M-16s and they promptly hustled them off to Vietnam. the Half tracks were then replaced with M-42 (also referred to as T-42) open turret tanks. The turret was outfitted with two (twin) forty millimeter guns. Was later assiged to Funeri Barracks as the Commanding Generals Driver. (34th AAA Brigade) Commanding General was BG Mellnik, the only Russian born general in the U S Army. One real cool dude, even if I was only a Pfc. Mark was 4 Mark seventy phenning to the Dollar, and a tall tall stein of beer across the river in Neckerau was only 20 phenning. Neckerau was in the French zone and very few GIs went over there. I hd a car, (1948 Mercury so I did not have a transportation problem. Would up marrying my Schatzi from Ludwigshafen in Feb 1957, and still have here. Still havent got her trained though. Subsequently went back two more times, both times to Pirmesens. (Signal major relay station). Then went on to three tours in Vietnam. Still """IN""" the Army. I am a Civil servant working at Ft Gordon Ga, (and have been for the last 25 years..1981 to present) Develop training materias for Radio Operator Maintainers.

How many of you who served in Germany during the Cold War would give your eye teeth just to go back a few days to when you were a young soldier living in the land of half-timbered houses and gracious people? Serving in Germany during the Cold War would have to go down as possibly the best duty an American soldier could experience since the establishment of the U.S. Military.
When I went to Germany as a draftee in 1964 I was empty and insecure. I received Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord while on a religious retreat in Berchtesgarden in 1965. I felt the indescribable Peace of the Holy Spirit for the first time and haven't been the same since. (Thank God!)
My short-time experience in Germany (Thanks to Uncle Sam and the draft)transformed me in many ways. especially spiritually. I recently put together a short e-movie. It takes a few minutes to download but is worth the wait. Just type in:

Blessings to all former Cold Warriors.

P.S. I was stationed at Muenster Bei Dieburg
Kaserne.

At Hq DCA, I worked AUTODIN enhancements with DCA-Eur for sites throughout GE during the late 70s and early 80s. Spent lots of time working with 5th Signal Command, the AUTODIN switching center at Pirmasens, 4ATAF, and CENTAG at Rupertsweiller.
