I was stationed at D Btry 5th MSL Bn 6th ADA in Honteim (sp?) from 75 to 78. NIKE-HERC. $26/month isolation pay. No matter what your MOS, you were a tower guard for the first several months. It sucked. Took over as classified courier and did that for quite a while. That was a blast. Drove everywhere armed, and saw lots of country. Even got to chase a SMLM vehicle once. I wanted a "real" driving job being a 64C20 so they made me the Battalion commander's driver (Duh!). Worked out of Neubruke. Our headquarters were in Baumholder. That sucked most of the time. Finally got out of that when they changed commands and went back to Delta Btry. Was the motor sargent there until I rotated back to Texas in 78. Lots of really great people. Being in a small unit was great. Lots of good food and beer. Apfel Korn is still a favorite schnaps. Wouldn't mind hearing from any of the loonies I was with. Kind of miss seeing that Boot tree outside the main gate. When a person would leave they'd toss their boots into a big tree just outside the main (only) gate. Must have been 60 pairs in it when I left.

From June 1974-Sept 1975 I was a SP4 assigned to HHB 1st Bn 1st ADA in Butzbach but as a Operations Central Repairman but was actually stationed 60 miles away at C BTRY with the "BOC" (Battalion Operations Central). This was at Downs Barracks in Fulda. There was about 30 of us that were attached to C-Brty and we occuppied the lower floor of one of the two barracks accross the street from the Btry Headquarters. The BOC itself was located about 4 miles west of the Kaserne up on a hill overlooking the Fulda Gap. I will see if I can find some photos of the missile site (before the move to Wildflecken)that Warrant Officer Talley speaks about in his narative and submit them. Charles Talley was my superior at the time. The one thing I remember the most was the mouse that got fried on a main transformer in the wall of the OC and caused a multitude of problems with the electronics. We started noticing a smell that progressivly got worse to the point we were having to wear our gas mask to filter the smell out. It was the worse thing I have ever smelled. We eventually found the mouse after we were forced to tear half the van apart. The OC was still not 100% up and running a month or so later when I ETS'd back to the States. Good food, Good beer.

I was an Admin Specialist - Document Control in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff Intelligence (ODCSI) Heidleberg from 1969 thru 1970. Worked at Campbell Barracks and like most every other enlisted lived at Patton Barracks. This was a very formative time which I enjoyed to the extreme.

Today I have two sons in the military; one in the Navy, the other in the Infantry currently in Iraq.

Started with the 59th. They gyro'd back to the states transferred to the 9th. They didn't need me; was transferred to the 84th and they sent me to the 664th. GI parties every Friday night and full field inspections on Saturdays. E4s and above to the rear; Pfcs and Pvts police the area.

Welcome to the 664th. Wish I could do it again. Any old ammo humpers out there?

Thank you for your web-side,this is a historical very important part of our german history.I did serve 41 years along the former Iron Curtain together and side by side with many US friends of the 2nd ACR. Im honorary Cpt. of the Border Legion of the 2nd ACR and Associated member of the US Constabulary Association. As a Historian in uniform I did write the book "An der Grenze der Freiheit- die US -Verbnde am Eisernen Vorhang 1945 -1990.("US-FORCES ON FREEDOMS FRONTIER") This is a "thank-you-book" for all US soldiers, espcially the ACRs as covering and screening forces along the Iron curtain, staying with us for defending Germany against a possible aggression of the warshaw-pact troops. We in Germany would never have got the greatest wonder of history, the "Breaking the Wall" and reuniting Germany without those thousands of US forces, thank you again. God bless and take care. yours Hans-J. Schmidt

Served as PIO, CIO and PAO under two commanding generals. Worked with "Little NATO" (U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, German Army, French Army, Canadian Air Force and city of Zweibruecken). Have large collections of photos during 1970-1972 from MATCOM and TASCOM facilities and many copies of MATCOM LEDGER newspaper.

I was stationed in Bamberg, Germany, with the 26th Infantry Regiment (1st Inf Div)from October, 1949, to November, 1952.
The 26th helped me focus on my future. When I was discharged, I returned to school, and upon graduAting, worked for the State of CA & USDOJ for some thirty nine years.

P.S. I have several photos of some of the activities of "E" Company and the towns we "visited" (some whose names I no longer remember).

Oh .. Just remembered to ask,
Anyone have old photo's of Nahbollenbach Depot, or
Idar Oberstein, (in the late 1950's- early 1960's) they'd care to share?
I'd sure like to have some. Those I once had, were lost.

Can share pics taken in 2003, after the return to Germans, if anyone wants.

Thanks
Charlie

Looking for anyone that served at Nahbollenbach Gen Depot, in 1964,'65, from the 522nd QM co housed at Strassberg Kaserne, but especially for PFC Frederick R. Schmidt, and SP4 Steve Mooney. Freddy, returned to the USA, and Steve married a German girl, and stayed. Anyone with current info please!!!! mail me...
Oh yes, you can see an article I wrote (in '02) for this site under the main menu: 95th QM Bn link.
Since writing, I returned to Strassberg Kaserne,( in 2003) and got the tour, and the royal treatment, from the then current CO of the base. I spent an entire week (of three in De.) in Idar Oberstein. The "Nahbollenbach Depot" is no more, returned to the German people, and turned into a modern shopping center. Gone are the R/R tracks, majority of warehouses, and any signs of military presence. The only remaining buildings standing, are Whse 4, and the 4 story operations bldg, complete with the 5 ft tall, painted "COMZ patch" sign between the 2nd and 3rd floors. We wore the "COMZ" patch, on our left shoulder, and the flaming sword, on our right
Everything else, including the blacktop is gone. There is now a new road from inside the main gate, to the eastern gate, where you'll now find a "McDonalds" restaurant, and a DIY Home Center. There is no more Nahe river thru town of Oberstein, it has been submerged, and a modern highway tops it, and a new tunnel makes a shortcut through the mountain next to the old R/R tunnel. The old road, still remains, and I drove it for nostalgia's sake. It eventually joins the new Highway. Most of the town remains, but with some 38 years of improvements.
My old Schloss Shenke's still is in business, and the old dance hall sign, faded with age still hangs above the old entrance, but it no longer exists as such. It's now a caterer's. But, the restaurant downstairs is still owned, now, by the 3rd generation of the family, and the 4th is waiting tables...I almost want to cry...Wonderful Memories! I'll go back again

Great site! I'm always looking for people I was stationed with. Not alot of luck though. I was at Leighton Barracks from 1975 thru 1977, 34th MP Detachment and worked at the MP station in downtown Wurzburg. Does anybody remember the MP Club downstairs from the MP Station? Alot of great times there! I never got to visit alot of the other Kaserne's but I was housed with the 3rd ID Signal Div. when I first arrived in Wurzburg because the MP's didn't have accommodations for women at the time. It was quite an experience. Linda Hollingsworth and Felix (I can't remember her last name) were my roommates for a little while. Well just wanted to add my 2 cents. The service was the best time of my life and i'll never forget the friends I made.

Cen. in Mnchweiler, later in Germersheim and the last time at the 2050th Civ Spt Gp (Gd) in Karlsruhe Neureut. It was a great time for me in my live an I blame my self for loosing all the contacts over those years
If there is anybody outside and remember me, just mail and we can talk about those old good times. I m realy looking for TOP Adkins, he was First Sgt. at the 84th Ord Bat. and later he was with me stationed in Germersheim. We had a great time together. Would be great to hear from him. There are maybe come people remember me about my job in the distribution center at the 84th Ord Bt. with
Gonzo, Maj. P, Shirley from the cmd office and Maj Rose, Carmine Largo, there are so many names I can not tell all of them. It would be great to hear something from old friends.
Congratulations to you for this page and just go on in this way.

I was stationed in Neu-Ulm in 1969 with the 579th Ordnance in Nelson Barracks. In 1990 I set up a finance company in Munich and traveled back to Neu-Ulm for a visit with my family... "Come on dad this is boring!" The units that were there were just moving back to the states and I've subsequently learned the Germans after our soldiers departed have now housed Eastern Europeans in the barracks!
It was really neat for me to take a walk around the post after 20 years.

Great site! I served at Reese Barracks in Augsburg from 1965-67 with the 24th Infantry Division and have many fond memories of Germany and the U.S. Army. My time there literally was the beginning of my intellectual awakening, and I traveled extensively all over Europe and the Middle East, both on duty as well as on leave, and the Army allowed me to perform many interesting assignments as well. Over the years, I have lost touch with the many fine men with whom I served. Thank you for creating such a useful resource for those of us who are now beginning to feel nostalgic about those wonderful times. I hope that in time others stationed in Augsburg will post their photos and recollections of service there. As a young man with little good sense or foresight, I didn't take any photos while there, so I am totally dependent on the good graces of others to post whatever they have for me to enjoy in my "old age."
