I was born in Salzburg Austria in 1929 and lived there until I left for Canada in 1951. When the War was over in May 1945 I returned home from a Training camp in Mondsee near Salzburg and found out quickly that there was little hope for a young person; food was scarce and I had to find ways to feed my mother and myself I knew only a few words of english but it did not take me long to establish contact with various US Army personnel and I learned "barrack-english" quite easy. I worked at the Transit Mess in the Sternbraeu Gasthof as a storekeeper; then in Feb.1947 I started to work for the Ordnance Corps and was involved in record keeping; loading and unloading of trainloads of Vehicles; AutoParts and much more.I was also involved (part time) with the MP's on their evening visits (raids?) to various night clubs; acting as a translator. These were interesting years; educational in a peculiar way and my goal was to immigrate to the USA; unfortunately I had no "Sponsor"; my application (1948) was not accepted; but in 1951 Canada

Thanks to this great website I got to know a veteran who was stationed here in the 19th district of Vienna at a place nearby my home. It's interesting to hear what this place was like 50 years ago when I was still not borne. If there's anyone else who knows the 19th district of that time, please contact me.

I served with Hdq & Service Troop, 4th Constab Regt in and about Linz, Austria between March, 1947 to July, 1948. Capt. William Sikorski was the officer in charge of the Regimental Motor Pool and I was an 014 wheeled veh mechanic. In June of 1947 I was sent to 7712 EUCOM Intelligence School at Oberammergau, Germany. Our regiment's mission in Land Upper Austria was primarily a presence. We had a Military Government presence, but the people of Austria were resigned to their defeat and were delighted with our presence for we brought food, stability and an absence of the Russian forces that were on the eastern shore of the Danube River. Vienna was the shadow of what took place in Berlin. The Russians blockaded Vienna before any move was put on blockading Berlin. If memory serves me correctly we had three blockades of Vienna during the months I was at Linz. We had good people in our 4th Constab. Regiment. Some of them were combat vets, others were hold-overs from the US Army of the 1930's, but most of us were teenagers,

John Glass advised me about this site which I was completely unaware of until then. I think it is a great site. Read "History" and sent my comments about it to Bill Meck. I was with the 796th MP BN from May'43 until Feb'46. Was 1st. Sgt. of "B" Co. when I was sent Stateside. Started out in Camp Shanks;went to Ft. Custer(Inf Basic);back to Camp Shanks then to ETO until return to States.

I served with C Company 5th Infantry Regiment, E Company 242nd Infantry Regiment and a Comapny 16th Infantry in Vienna, from 1945 until May 1947, when I was medically evacuated from the 110th Station Hospital thru Germany to the US. A serious confrontation with a certain element of one of the Four Powers on Radio Tower road out of Grinzing Village resulted in my back beeing broken in seven places. Our Units had quarters in Stift Kaserne on Maria-hilfer Strasse, in school house on Wahringer Strasse and in a School Building at 41 Himmel Strasse in Grinzing Village near Kahlenburg Kastle. At the time I was a Platoon Sgt. A company of the 16th Was Gen Clark's Honor Company and I was assigned to the USFA Color Guard for all Parades and Gen Clark escort duties, which were many. Carlyle P. Woelfer was the Company Commander. Our First Sergeant was Waldo A. Siller. Siller's entire Military Career, 33 years, had been spent in A Company of the 5th Infantry Regiment, until we were renamed the 16th. He had been the First Sergeant for 27 yea

I was in the 4th Cavalry Regiment in January 1946 at Bad Schallerbach Austria, this was before it changed to Constabulary, we then were sent to Gallsbach and on to Enns where the horse platoon was started, we were there on the Russian border sector on the river Enns, close to the Danube river. we never did any horse patrol there are anywhere. We then were sent to Hoersching where we were reduced to about 25 horses and about 5 men . Colonel Charles B McClellen was the regimental commander, he was a cavalry officer and interested us in learning how to jump horses so we spent the next 2 years jumping in international competition in Vienna, Ennsbruck and Salsburg, I won the first place in Salsburg 1948, some of our team also won in Vienna and Ennsbruck. Thanks Howard Johnson
