I served in the 68th MP Co. in Camp Darby between Dec 1953 to Apr 1955. Everyone stationed in Austria at that time had to pass thru Camp Darby and be escorted to their assignments by MP's of the 68th. I was at Darby when Trieste was declared no longer aa occupied city and all our troops were relocated to Darby. I believe it was the 351st Inf.Bat. If anyone was there during this timeframe, please contact me.

This is to correct my original entry. Please change (1945) to (1946), and it makes more sense. I want to add that this is a really wonderful site.

I was the Jeep driver for the S-4 with Service Co., 232nd.Inf. 42nd (Rainbow) Division. When the war ended we were at the Austrian border. After living in Salzburg for a month or so, 232nd Regimental Hq moved to BadHofgastein, where I remained until I had enough points to go home. (Approximately Jan-Feb. 1945) I loved the beauty of the place, and the civilans were very friendly toward us. As a clerk, I set up the civilian payroll for that area. I learned to ski there, and if lifespan and finances permit, I would love to return there some day. There is a lot more, but I will wait to see if anyone wants to hear it.

Exceptional web site - well presented and organized with fascinating material. My site, Policing Occupied Berlin, is barely off the ground. Thanks Walter for inviting me to view your site.

I was attached to the radio station Blue Danube Network (BDN)in Salzburg and St. Johann /Pongau from 1954 until the very last day, which was October 14, 1955. We left one day earlier that we had to under the treaty. I then went to AFN in Germany. Went back to University of Salzburg School of Law and got another degree there. My wife and I now live part-time in Saalbach, which is wonderful little village near Zell am See. Anybody know anyone from BDN?

What an interesting website! By chance I came across it. I'm an 38 yrs old Austrian living in the 19th district of Vienna. I'm interested in history and I know that the 19th district was part of the American zone. I wonder if there's a veteran who was in this district at that time and still remembers the vine yards on the slopes of Kahlenberg, the typical Viennese wine taverns called "Heurigen" or other places here.

I am greatly impressed and proud to be a part of the USFA Webb Site. Our Soldiers who served in Austria were the best and took a back seat to no one. My assignment to USFA was one of the finest assignments of my military career. As a result I became a career soldier.

Served with the 124th Station Hospital, Linz in 1947, then transfered to Hoersching, Austria, to Medical Detachment, 4th Const. Regt; later to become first Sgt. Return to USA in 1949. Served in WWII, Pacific theater with Merchant Marine, then US Army after, return, ending as Commissioned Officer with multiple degrees many years later, with retired status at Major. Then continued my professional work as Hospital Exec, Consulant, writer, etc., and now serves as adjunct professor for the Houston Baptist University Health Science Center. Have interesting web site showing a number of my books, one hopefully to be soon made into a major motion picture. Loved Austria. Took special training at the School of Standards at Zell Am Zee, Austria. A lot of things went on in Austria, many of which the American public has no knowledge . . . especially things dealing with oru allies, the Russians. Glad that part is over. But a nation that leads most always be on the alert as "Uneasy is the head tht wears the crown." Best to my old comrades,
