Hi, what a fascinating site. My father served in Austria with the British Army from 1953 to 1955 and I was with him for most of the time. We lived in Graz, Klagenfurt and Vienna. I can recall our time in Vienna when my parents had many American service friends and used to visit the NCOs club. I can find little about the British Army in Austria so it's helpful to find information through the eyes of others. Keep up the good work. John

I was in S-3 at Camp McCauley from Jan 1955 til June, then Camp Roeder til Sept, then Taylor Barracks in the 350th til Mar 56, then to Boston to represent the US Army in Olympic Trials in single sculling. I wasn't very good, and eliminated in the semifinals. Net result I had a good time in the army, got the GI bill for med school, and didn't have to go to Vietnam. Unfortunately I can't locate any of the friends I had in the service (or maybe I didn't have any?)

After browsing through your site, I can better understand the hardships dad faced after the war. Having survived the war, he was faced with the task of trying to re-establish lives for hundreds of thousands of displaced persons. After fighting his way across Europe with the 99th Recon Troop, 99th Infantry Division, first as part of the First Army, then as part of the Third Army, after the war he was sent to the 83rd Recon Troop, 83rd Infantry Division as a platoon leader on 9 Jul 45 as the 99th Infantry was being deactivated. On 1 Nov 45, 1 Lt Henry Gettman became Displaced Persons Officer for HQ, 83rd Infantry Division. He received an Army Commendation Ribbon from Gen. Macon for his duties as DP Officer for the period 1 Nov 45 to 25 Feb 46. From 26 Feb 46 till 30 June 46, he was Displaced Persons Officer for HQ, 42d Infantry Division Artillery. From 1 July 1946 till 18 Mar 47, he was Displaced Persons Officer for HQ, 4th Constabulary Sqdn. Not bad considering only five years earlier he was a buck Private draftee, and only 5'0" tall

I'am proud to have been part of the occupation of Austria 1944/45. I met some great people there and made some deep ruted friends.I ran a night club up in the Vienna Woods during the occupation to keep the boys happy. I keep in contact with several people in Vienna dayley. I wish to go back one day to visit some friends. Vienna was a great place, I'm not sure about it now 60 years later, maybe not. Well, I still have great memories. If there is any one out there that wants to contact please do. my email is tootie1@erols.com

Hi folks....I am looking for a 1/2 brother, born in Salzberg (or thereabouts)somewhere around '52 or '53. My father, Sargent Charles Grover Cleveland Ainsworth, was stationed over there from 5/51 to 4/53 with the Army. The information I have off his discharge indicates 7689 HQ CO...does this mean anything to anybody? Any information that could be forwarded to me would be very helpful in out search. We really don't know where to start. Thank you. |
