I was assigned to 1st Bn, 23rd Inf, 2nd ID at Fort Benning, GA about Oct 1962. We were part of the Rotoplan to move a mech inf unit to Germany and was stationed at Baumholder for 6 months. After that, the unit was reflagged as 1st Bn, 87th Inf, 8th ID. I stayed because I had enough time left to serve for a tour of duty. The short timers rotated back to Ft. Benning. I was in Ground Surveillance Section of HQ Co, 1/87 until being discharged in Jun 1965. Like many others, I hated my time there but, now look back favorably to my time in Germany.

I was hoping someone might be able to help me. My grandfather served in Germany from around December 1952 to May 1954. He was with the 28 Infantry division and was a cannoneer in Battery C of the 108th Field Artillery. His name was Roy Nelson and was from Stoughton WI. I am hoping someone can help me with where he would have been located in Germany. One of the places he had listed was Fussen Germany. Would anyone happen to know the name of the Army base he could have been station at. Feel free to email me at bjn72@hotmail.com with any and all information you might know about this general area. I am doing some research on this part of Germany while he was in the service.

First, Walter what a great site. I have been a contributor as well as constant visitor and a fan of this site. Keep up the good work.

Second, I am looking for a Billy Shaw. He and his family (five kids: two daughters named Gracy & Gladis (Gladys)) left Germany about August 1964. While there they lived with a German family: Karl Englhart, Grundweg 17, 8451 Hahnbach (92256). My German friends would really like to reconnect with them. They believe that Billy may have worked at Grafenwhoer or Vilseck (or maybe Amberg). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to email me. ThanX.

I served with the 42nd Ordinance Company 85th Batallion, 7th Army located on Pioneer Kasern, Wolfgang (Hanau) Germany 1960-1962.
I was in the 3rd DS platoon, was a 5 ton wrecker operator and we were mostly on the road as a direct support unit assisting other units in the area.
I have made contact with one person through this web site and was able to get him in touch with a person in his platoon he had asked about.
I married a German girl and we are still together (51 yrs.)
Recently retired after 30 plus years with a city municipality and still reside on the west coast.
My wife and I have returned numerous times to Germany and have been back on Pioneer and some of the other Kaserns in the area. Hope to be returning again soon.
Prior to meeting my wife I spent many nights at the Jolly Bar listing to the Tielman Brothers.
Would like to hear from any of you that were there with the 42nd. during the same time frame.
Would also like to hear from any one that was with the 42nd after I left to catch up on what happened with the 42nd.

Great site, i was six months old when Mom and I arrived in Ludwigsburg Jan 1953), Dad was Lt Leslie R Sears, Jr, assigned to 91st AAA AW, Battery D i think platoon leader and then XO. We lived in an apartment building nearby, were there any dependents quarters in Ludwigsburg or maybe in Stuttgart. I think by fall of 1953 we had moved to Nurnberg where Dad went to Finance school and transferred branches- first in the Navy (radar tech), then in the Mass National Guard - Coast Artillery- 685th AAA Bn on Cape Cod and finally Germany.

August 1968 - March 1970 24th Engr Bn (Combat) 4th Armored Division.

Stationed at Johnson Kaserne (Barracks) Furth, West Germany.
Started as wheeled vehicle mechanic, Assigned as parts clerk, fuel truck driver and operator. Transferred to Combat Engr Vehicle Crew as Tank Operator (Driver).

Participated in Tank Crew Qualification Course in Graf and awarded 3rd in 1969. Froze are asses off during winter operations in Hohenfels. Our Crew was from B Co. assigned to D Co. as Tank Platoon. A Co. was detached from battalion and located elsewhere in West Germany.

Jim Snodgrass was first sergeant driver for B Co. and Bill Ewan was our Tank Crew Gunner. Tim Ribis was the cannon and ammo loader.

Our Battalion was called out on readiness alert when the Russian Army came with tanks into Prague, Checzslovakia. This was in late 1969 or - early 1970. I understand this action was called operation black lion.

I must admit I miss their friendship and wish them well. The beer, songs, pizza, jokes and c-rations were enjoyable too.

Oh Ya, I was there also when the Germans built the first bridge to carry water across it in late 1969. They requested to use our tanks to pull scaffolding out from under the newly constructed bridge. It didn\'t work.

It was nice to reflect memories, Sgt. Pate

Spent waaaay too much time chasing after the cute German Girls (really miss that part). - Walkin\' downtown to the little Disco club...

Surprised that I actually made Spec 4 (barely). Miss my good buddy Karl Heinz.

Feel really bad after buying an old Pontiac that blew up the first day, and then sat in the Co. parking lot for quite awhile.

Regret that I didn\'t take more photos and remember friends ( not sure I had any?) Hope everyone is doing well. We\'re getting old...

Dear Walter ,

2013 is coming to an end and we of cold- war.de want to share this opportunity to write to you a few sentences .

We all share the research and documentation of the history of our and other countries. Whether it is the areas of civil or military history , below or above ground or in the air or the water, unites us all the same. Some people spend this much time in front of the computer , travels to the most remote places or in archives researched and documented other historical sources . It is often underestimated or forgotten what we all do for a valuable work , not only to us to get a piece of history , but to give you on the path to our future generations about it.

We wish you the end of 2013 a wonderful , quiet and relaxing Christmas with your family , friends and acquaintances as well as a good transition into the year 2014.

On a good and informative cooperation.

I like this website for detailed info about Germany in general. I was stationed at Hanau, Francois Kaserne from March 1965 to Feb !966. I worked in Headquarters Message center, down the hallway to the east and across the hallway from S2. The Sgt Majors office was nearer to the front door. The Mail room was next to our office to the left. The CO\'s Office was upstairs. The XO\'s office was down the hallway I think. Our job was to carry documents to Fliegerhorst Kaserne about 3 miles or so East .We decoded encrypted messages. Our CO Lt Col Lloyd A Corkan,
XO Major Taylor, Sgt Major Stainbrook. Just some name I remember. Joe Martinez, Edward C Offerdahl, Fred Wood, Robert Magni, Barnell Edens,
Glen Williams (willy), Donald R Crego, Sgt Thomas. Sgt Musser, Lt Burgalt (sp) ,Lt Lehman, And I know I will think of more after I close. I was good duty , got along with everyone . Many pictures of Hanau and you may see mine on this website. Front gates of Francois, Yorkhof, Hessen Homburg and Fliegerhorst. 1965. Market plaza down town. Google earth.
I hope to hear from someone. Good Luck to all. Paul Buresh

I\'m hoping someone can help me in my search for information regarding my father, Roland J. Hess who served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1955-1960. I do not have much information, although I do know he was an MP.
I\'m trying to find out where in Germany he served and any other details. He passed away in 2001 and after his passing it was revealed that prior to marrying my mother ,he married a woman in Germany in 1958 and also possibly had a son with her. They then divorced when he returned to the United States as her parents would not allow her to leave Germany. I would like to search for my 1/2 brother and connect with him if possible. In my research the national personnel records center advised that a fire in 1973 destroyed his military records and I cannot find any other information. It would be greatly appreciated that if you knew my father and have any information, please email me at kermit231@aol.com. Thank you in advance.

in the summer of 2011 and found the medical clinic that I worked in still

I was assigned to the Co B, 506th QM Company in Hanau, Darmstadt and Wildflecken from 1961 to 1963. Later I lived in Germany and worked for the USAREUR Class VI Agency as a civilian. I left the Class VI Agency when AAFES took it over (What a shame) and worked for Joseph E. Seagram & Sons in California, New York and Asia. I am now retired and live in the Philippines.

A great addition to your website would be any information about the USAREUR Class VI Agency and the service it provided to the men and women of USAREUR. Over the years the Agency contributed many millions of dollars to MWR funds in Europe and I am unable to find any information on it anywhere on the web. I would love to hear from any former Class VI employees.

I was stationed with Co, B, 3rd avn bn in Kitzingen from Sept. 1962 till feb. 1964. I was a MPQ-29 Radar Operator. I played basketball with Craig Phillips during that time rotated home before the won the championship.
What I remember most is that we spent around 20days each month out in the field attached to any unit that was playing war games. The thing I remember most about being stationed there was growing up!

I worked with Walter by providing information about an Air Force weapons control system that was installed in Germany \"back in the day!\" That information remains today as the most detailing listing about the 412L system available anywhere on the internet. Great job Walter and keep up the good work!!

Spent my entire tour, 66 to 68 , at a 34th Signal Bn radio relay site in Reisenbach. This was a very small site with 6 to 7 army personal. When I first arrived Reisenbach was a joint Army and Airforce relay site, The AF pulled out in early 67 but would send up 2 or 3 guy\'s from time to time to put in a temporary radio shot. Great duty,,, made many German friends from the closest town of any size, Eberbach a/Necker. Google Reisenbach and check out our web site. Always looking for guys that were stationed at the site.

I was looking for info on my dad James (Jimmy) Herrington, who was stationed in Moenchberg from 1959 to 1961 (or 1962). And then in Werl Germany from 1963 to 1966. My mom and I also lived in Germany with him at that time. I did find a short quote about his refering to Moenchberg as bobcat sideways, in an email posted under Company A Det A\'s 1961 section. That was amazing to actually see my dad mentioned. Sadly, he passed away in mid 1980\'s before I had time to ask him about his Army work in Germany and other countries.

If anyone out there remembers Jimmy Herrington and my mom (Marilyn), give me a shout. My mom know lives in Nashville TN.

Kind regards,
Shari

Walter,

I have tried several times over the last year to send you 1950s era USAREUR photos, however the link on your site appears to be corrupted and non-functional. I have even tried the link from different computers.

Even the one Email address I can find lurking within your site -- usareur@usarmygermany.com -- is returned by mailer-daemon as undeliverable. So what is the correct Email address to contact you and why not simply state it plainly on your website apart from that failed link?
