The photo below is a section of the large aerial photo of Rhein-Main Air Base shown in full in Photo #8. This section shows, from afar, the northern portion of the original German Flugplatz at Rhein Main that was used by the US Air Force in the days of the Occupation.

The civilian passenger terminal was constructed in March 1946 on the north side of the airfield. The terminal was used by both military and commercial flight traffic.

On 1 April 1959, the northern portion of the base was turned over to the Flughafen A.G. and by December, the last US military controllers were phased out of the tower and approach control.
