I put "United States Forces in Austria" in search for the heck of it to see what would come up. What a surprise, a history of the occupation to Austria!
I arrived in Linz from Marburg (Replacement Depot) fresh off the boat in December 1948 to await further orders. After about a month I was sent to the 583rd Engineer Battalion in Vienna that was located off of Währingerstrasse and Herbeckstrasse.
I had received orders to go back to the States when the Korean War broke out and was given a year's extension. During this time I married a girl from Vienna who lived near the Schoenbrunn Castle and we both left Vienna in June 1952 on the USNS Hodges.
I was a heavy equipment operator, mainly crane. However, because of our small size, we all became familiar with all our equipment. I also played a lot of basketball, softball and ice hockey. I was on the EUCOM hockey team in 1951 played in Garmisch.
The pictures of the Yank Kino, Clam Galas service club and others brought back lots of memories. I have friends, and a nephew and family, in Vienna with whom I still communicate. I have been back there several times and enjoyed every minute of it. We stay with friends who live in Tulbing that is close to Tulln. He was in the automobile business and therefore drove us around or loaned us a car. |
