The US Army used the other one; I seem to remember we also had a guard out there, mainly to keep people from wandering into the kaserne. The guard on duty had to wear a red scarf; can't remember if he was armed or not. I never was a guard on that post. I did have to pull CQ (charge of quarters) at our barracks while we were there. For one month, I alternated with another soldier, by the name of Johnson from South Carolina, one day on, one day off for about a month shortly before we moved to our new barracks at Spangdahlem.
