| Until recently, U.S. Army headquarters in Europe (USAREUR) has been responsible for depot maintenance in Europe. This responsibility also extended to the management and control of the two U.S. Army maintenance plants located at Mainz and Ober-Ramstadt. On 1 July 1976, command and control of these two plants, with all their associated functions, passed to DARCOM. This transfer of responsibility, mission nncl resources for depot maintenance and related depot operations in Europe benefits both commands: it reduced the span of control necessary to manage the maintenance program in Europe, allowing USAREUR to concentrate its maintenance effort fully on improving units' materiel readiness posture, and permitted DARCOM to assume its role as the worldwide manager for depot maintenance. |

| DARCOM-Europe was activated on July 2, 1982 at Hammonds Barracks, Seckenheim. This organization was established to provide command, control, and coordination of all DARCOM activities in US Army Europe. Its role is to conduct long-range planning for peacetime and mobilization and to provide a single point of contact between USAREUR and 7th Army logistics elements and DARCOM readiness commands. In 1984, DARCOM was redesignated as Army Materiel Command and DARCOM-Eur became AMC-Eur. |

| The European branch of the newly activated U.S. Army Materiel Development and Readiness Command in Alexandria, Va., has been activated at Seckenheim, Germany. The new command, DARCOM-Europe, was activated to help streamline operations and provide tighter control of DARCOM's support to the troops in Europe. In the past, seven separate organizations were providing logistical support to more than 25 USAREUR combat units. With the new organization, there will be just one central point of contact for that support. The new organization at Seckenheim will be commanded by Brig Gen Lynn H. Stevens. The headquarters staff will consists of five directorates with a staff of approximately 100 military and civilian personnel. |

| The U.S. Army TMDE Support Activity-Europe (USATESAE) was activated in 1979 as a subordinate unit of the Army Metrology and Calibration Center (AMCC). It was formed using personnel and equipment assets from USAREUR, SETAF, INSCOM, 5th Signal Command, and MICOM. The 521st, 523rd, and 524th Maintenance Companies were activated in 1983 at Schwanheim, Augsburg, and Pirmasens, Germany respectively. At this time the U.S. Army TMDE Support Activity-Europe, headquartered in Zweibruecken, Germany, was deactivated and the 517th Maintenance Battalion (TMDE) was activated. The 517th was the first AMC TOE unit to become operational outside of the CONUS theater of operations. The 517th Maintenance Battalion (TMDE) and its subordinate companies provided TMDE calibration and repair support within the U.S. Army Europe (USAREUR) logistic support area for the next decade. |

| US Army Test, Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment Support Acty, Eur is being reorganized and redesignated as the 517th Maintenance Battalion (TMDE) on Feb 1 1983. No change in mission. Three subordinate units, located in Pirmasens, Augsburg and Schwanheim, will become Maintenance Companies. MISSION: to provide calibration and repair support for measuring and diagnostic equipment throughout the European theater. The Battalion is responsible for such equipment as signal generators, oscilloscopes, electronic counters, digital voltmeters, multimeters and pressure gauges in an area that stretches from Bremerhaven to Turkey. |
