39th Trans. Bn. recently activated
(Editor's Note: The following article is one in a series devoted to 4th TRANSCOM units and their histories.)
The 39th Trans. Bn. history dates back to 1936 when it was constituted into the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 2nd Battalion, 21st Quartermaster Regiment.
The battalion received credits for participating in the India-Burma and Central Burma campaigns, during World War II.
During the next 27 years the battalion was reorganized several times until it was deactivated at Fort Lewis, Wa. on March 10, 1972.
The unit was reactivated Feb. 17, 1986 and the current headquarters is at Rhein Ordnance Barracks, Kaiserslautern.
Four Movement Control teams, two Air Terminal Control Teams and 11 subordinate movement teams comprise the 39th Trans. Bn.
Movement Control Team - Idar Oberstein
Movement Control Team-Idar Oberstein was formed in July, 1971 to balance the workload within the 2nd Movements Region. Feb. 17, 1986, the MCT-Idar Oberstein was reorganized under the immediate supervision of the 39th Trans. Bn.
Falling under the MCT-Idar Oberstein is
one Branch Movement Control Team
(BMCT) in Mons and one Highway Movement Control Team (HMCT) in Koblenz
Movement Control Team - Kaiserslautern
The MCT-Kaiserslautern was constituted April 1, 1958 as a District Transportation Movements Office of the 594th Transportation Group, Kaiserslautern. The MCT went under many changes until Feb. 17, 1986 when it was renamed MCT Kaiserslautern and assigned to the 39th Trans. Bn.
Assigned under the MCT-Kaiserslautern are three Branch Movement Control teams in Worms, Pirmasens and Zweibruecken, one highway movement control team and one rail movement management team, both in Saarbruecken.
Movement Control Team - Mannheim
MCT-Mannheim was constituted April 1, 1958 under the supervision of the 594th Trans. Gp. in West Germany. On Feb. 17, 1986 the MCT Mannheim was reorganized under the 39th Trans. Bn.
Under the MCT-Mannheim are two Branch Movement Control Teams in Mannheim and Karlsruhe, one rail movement managment team and one highway movement control team both in Karlsruhe.
Movement Control Team - Stuttgart
MCT-Stuttgart was constituted in 1951 and was responsible for coordinating the movement of Department of Defense assets in an area reaching from Heilbronn to Munich, West Germany.
Feb. 17, 1986, the MCT Stuttgart was reorganized under the 39th Trans Bn. However, the Stuttgart MCT is operationally controlled by the 229th Movement Control Center in Nellingen West Germany.
Air Terminal Movement Control Teams Rhein Main and Ramstein
During May 1951 the Army Air Traffic Coordinating Offices were established under the control of the 594th Transportation Group. AATCO's were established at Rhein Main Air Base, Ramstein Air Base, West Germany and Chateauroux Air Base, France. Later the ATMCTs were put under the supervision of the 39th Bn. and currently there is an ATMCT at Rhein Main and at Ramstein.
